Title: Figured Ground Artist: Jesse Van Horne Year: 2006 Media: Acrylic on Canvas 12"x14"

Every now and then I like to throw something in from way back! I painted this image during grad school while we were studying the "figure/ground" relationship between form and space. Some of the most fascinating images I have ever seen are these kinds of images generated from a birdseye view of any given city.

But the thing that fascinated me about this image is that it began to take on another form as I brushed in each consecutive "figure", I began to see some kind of an ancient battle helmet emerge, straight from the pages of some mythological text!

The image above is a totally ficticious "city" with a river winding through it. There is something just absolutely gorgeous about the simplicity in these kinds of designs.
