Modern Day Shaman #1

Modern Day Shaman #1.jpg

Title: Modern Day Shaman Artist: Jesse Van Horne Year: 2015 Media: Acrylic on Wood 18"x24"

This is my first self portrait. The title is a reflection of the way I perceive the role of the artist in modern day societies. Shamans of ancient cultures served as connectors or channels (among many other roles) between Earth & Sky or the realms of the seen and unseen.

One of the many roles of the artist is to serve the same sort of function for society & the world at large. People are busy in their lives attending to all the tasks of survival. Artists take time to address (often ceremoniously) the things that do not immediately pertain to physical survival but pertain to emotional/spiritual/energetic life or the unseen realm.

We have all had the experience of viewing a piece of art and being taken away for a moment to another place, where the matters and worries of the physical realm seem to fade away, if only for an instant. This is the power & potential of art. This is the power of the Modern Day Shaman.
